New York City (August 16th, 2011) – tART Year 8: A Self Curated Show opens September 9th at Art@Renaissance in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The exhibit will run from September 9th through October 14th. The art will be chosen and installed by artists from the collective.
Entering it’s 8th year, the tART collective presents new work by members - covering a wide cross-section of the current practices within the group. The show will be host to several events for residents of Greenpoint and the community at large. tART will engage with the site of Art@Renaissance for hands on workshops and discussions on art and social practice.

The tART collective functions as a contemporary feminist support structure for a group of artists in New York City, who are committed to exploring the intersections of visual art and public engagement as well as participating in post-graduate studio visits. Since 2004, the collective has used its exhibitions as a platform - to fundraise for Doctors Without Borders and Creative Time, to launch 'zines and present workshops, panel discussions and collaborations. When the collective expanded to its current maximum size in terms of logistics, members began to facilitate workshops teaching other artists how to set up their own groups. In 2011, tART members presented on the collective at the College Art Association conference in NYC (February) and Open Engagement conference, Portland, OR, (May.)

Artist Sandra Mack Valencia in El Museo's Bienal 2011
Sandra Mack Valencia (also an active member of the tART Collective and Hunter MFA alumni) is an artist friend of mine who was selected to exhibit in El Museo's 2011 Bienal. Her work will be on view at Lehman College Art Gallery, thru January 6, 2012, and is worth checking out.

No Proud Scars, Please
PRESS RELEASE:
Spattered Columns is pleased to announce No Proud Scars, Please—an exhibition curated by Peter Duhon. Its title taken from the metaphysical thriller, Possessions, written by prominent psychoanalyst, critic, Julia Kristeva, psychoanalyst, critic, and Professor Emeritus at the University de Paris VII. Kristeva is internationally recognized for innovative explorations in her groundbreaking and immensely influential texts such as Revolution in Poetic Language and Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection.
In her novel, Possessions, Kristeva details the gruesome discovery of the decapitated body of a close friend to the heroine Stephanie Delacour, who sets out to discover the murderer. The journey that ensues opens a conceptual terrain that eschews crippling and unproductive nostalgia—a journey that is both publicly and privately sociopolitical.
The five artists selected for this exhibition work with wide-ranging materials and concepts, some of which intersect with themes explored by Kristeva in her novel. The exhibition includes work by Gilad Ratman (video), Andres Laracuente (sculpture), Julian Lorber (painting), Carlos Charlie Perez (photography and video), Nikki Schiro (painting), and Don Edler (sculpture). No Proud Scars, Please is an exhibition that seeks to engage critically with time, history, memory and loss by privileging a spirit of Nietzschean affirmation with works of art that provoke productive multiplicity.

Today I registered to be a stem cell/bone marrow donor at a drive that was organized in the Ballroom of the HI Hostel in Harlem (What a cool building); an extension of Anna Lise Jensen's artwork "Have a Seat" (The floor installation which debuted as Jensen's contribution to the Composting Installation for the Sweet + Sour show...). My mouth was swabbed, as I sat on Anna Lise's floor installation. I filled out an application, got a sticker, painless and very interesting as I met a ton of extraordinary people and volunteers--one a survivor, whose presence and story really brought the live saving aspects of this kind of simple donation into the space and my heart. To close, I was offered a bright candy-ful print by Anna Lise Jensen, called "Life Savers"....

Art Exhibition to help the Earthquake and Tsunami victims in Japan

Venue: ISE Cultural Foundation Front Space Gallery
On March 11, the massive earthquake of magnitude 9,0 and the huge Tsunami hit Northeast of Japan and caused catastrophic damages. Thousands of people were killed and many more are still missing.
ISE Cultural Foundation is organizing 1-day art exhibition of "ART FOR JAPAN" in order to raise the fund for the earthquake and Tsunami victims in Japan.
The artists will donate their artworks and exhibit at ISE Cultural Foundation Front Space Gallery on Tuesday, March 29.
All of the artworks will be sold either $20 or $40 in cash only.
*ISE Cultural Foundation will match up the same amount of the all sales from the event and will donate 100% of the fund to Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures through the Japanese American Association of New York.
